What happened at the cross?

Have you ever wondered about the true meaning of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross? Let’s explore it together.

Jesus Christ gave His life to pay for the sins of the world. “3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures”. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Each of us has a debt because of our sins (Romans 3:23). The Bible tells us that the cost of this debt is death. Here’s what happened on that cross for you and me:

1. Jesus took our place :
Jesus was nailed to the cross, and God placed all our sins upon Him—every single one. “He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

2. Jesus bore the full penalty of our sins :
God dealt with our entire debt through Jesus' sacrifice. “He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it away by nailing it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14).

3. Jesus defeated evil and death :
By dying on the cross, Jesus overcame Satan, darkness, and the power of death. “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; he triumphed over them in him” (Colossians 2:15). “Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14).

4. Jesus established His ultimate authority :
Through His resurrection, Jesus showed His power over everything in creation. “20 He exercised this power in Christ by raising him from the dead and seating him at his right hand in the heavens— 21 far above every ruler and authority, power and dominion, and every title given, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he subjected everything under his feet and appointed him as head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way” (Ephesians 1:20-23).

Summary : Jesus fully paid the price for our sins and defeated the power of sin and death.

The resurrection of Jesus isn’t just a happy ending; it’s the proof that His sacrifice worked and our sins are fully paid for!

Even though the penalty for sin is death, Jesus Christ overcame it all on the cross, and His resurrection confirms that the power of sin is defeated.

If we trust completely in what Jesus has done for us, we will be saved! “8 For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— 9 not from works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).
